Celebrate Independence Day with parades, fireworks, and festivals

Once upon a time, the United States gave Mother England a run for her money — and we’re not talking about the World Cup. If you’re in the U.S. on the Fourth of July, don’t miss the parades, festivals, and fireworks celebrating our Independence Day!
There are events near most of our Northern California hostels, from small-town festivities to fantastic pyrotechnic displays.
San Francisco Hostels
The San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel will host its annual July 4 BBQ, just one mile from the city’s annual July 4 festivities at Pier 39. City events kick off at 3 p.m. on the pier with a line-up of live music and street performances, culminating in a 6 p.m. show by 80s revival band Tainted Love, and a 9:30 p.m. fireworks display over San Francisco Bay.
Also happening this holiday weekend are the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival, the Stern Grove Music Festival, and a Golden Gate Park Band concert in the park.
Marin Headlands Hostel
Just five miles from the Marin Headlands Hostel, Sausalito’s Fourth of July events include a 10 a.m. parade through downtown, an afternoon of live music, dancing, food, and family games, and a 6:30 p.m. festival and fireworks display in Gabrielson Park. Hungry hostellers can also stop by Sparrow Creek Montessori School (on the parade route) for an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast fundraiser.
The week of July 1-5, visitors can also head to San Rafael, 17 miles north of the hostel, for the Marin County Fair, which also has fireworks for the holiday.
Sacramento Hostel
Cal Expo, about four miles from the Sacramento Hostel, hosts the annual Independence Day festival and fireworks for Sacramento. Food, music, and dancing will be held in the grandstand starting at 6 p.m., followed by the largest fireworks display in the area. The event is free, but parking is $10.
Point Reyes Hostel
In Bolinas, 16 miles south of the Point Reyes Hostel on coastal Highway 1, the Fourth of July is celebrated with an annual tug-of-war match with the town of Stinson over the small channel of water separating the two towns. After the "war," Bolinas hosts a small parade downtown.
For fireworks or other festivities, visitors can head to San Rafael, 25 miles southeast of the hostel, for the Marin County Fair (July 1-5).
Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel
In Half Moon Bay, 7 miles from the Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel, a small old-fashioned parade along Main Street begins the holiday events, followed by a town picnic. That night, head to Pillar Point Harbor for a fireworks display just after sunset.
