Have a ball at San Francisco’s Carnaval (May 23-24)

Carnaval dancer

With something for everyone who loves Latin American and Caribbean cultures, Carnaval San Francisco is California’s largest multi-cultural celebration.

One of San Francisco’s most popular and cherished traditions, the 31st annual Carnaval is themed "Roots of Revival: Seeds of Change." A decidedly Latin drumbeat will ring throughout the Mission District as more than 400,000 revelers join in the fun of this two-day street festival.

Celebrate the best of Latin American and Caribbean cultures with an array of food, music, drumming, dancing, live music, and artistry from around the world.

The famous Carnaval Grand Parade (on Sunday, May 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m.), includes Brazilian-style "escola" samba contingents dancing in fantastic feathered headdresses or sweeping Bahia skirts. Other parade artists include Mexican Aztec performers, traditional African dancers and drummers, Polynesian dancers, and other amazing performances from the traditions of many countries and culture.
