American Indian Film Festival
November 6 - November 14
San Francisco's American Indian Film Festival is one of the nation's most prominent outlets for Native American films.
Since its begining in 1975, the festival has encouraged Native and non-Native filmmakers to bring to the broader media culture the Native voices, viewpoints, and stories that have been historically excluded from mainstream media. It aims to develop Indian and non-Indian audiences for this work, and to advocate tirelessly for authentic representations of Indians in the media.
Now in its 34th year, this nine-day festival premieres more than 80 new feature films, documentaries, shorts, PSAs, and music videos by and about American Indian and Canadian First Nation communities.
Highlights of this year's festival include The Only Good Indian, starring Wes Studi (best known for his role in The Last of the Mohicans), and the American Indian Motion Picture Awards Show, which honors filmmakers and actors, and showcases contemporary Native American talent.
The festival also includes a free screening on November 13 at Pier 39's Theater 39, of several short films made through the American Indian Film Institute's Native youth film workshop, the Tribal Touring Program.
