Free Shakespeare in the Park presents Pericles
August 30
One of the major free Shakespeare programs in the nation, Free Shakespeare in the Park has provided opportunities for more than 50,000 people to see high quality, professional theater free of charge across the Bay Area for 25 years.
This summer, the company celebrates the 400th anniversary of "Pericles," the Bard's grand story of heroic adventure, by setting the stage in frontier America of the mid-1800s (where a good tall tale was always appreciated).
Forced to flee for his life as a young man, Prince Pericles embarks on an epic journey that leads him from a tragic shipwreck to a joyful marriage, and from the loss of his beloved daughter to a surprising reunion. Along the way he encounters many memorable characters, from clownish fishermen to dancing suitors to roguish pirates. Ultimately good triumphs over evil, jealousy and vice are punished, and faithfulness and virtue are rewarded.
